“We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.” — Malala Yousafzai

Today is International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

This year’s theme is #BeBoldForChange, striving to forge a better working world — a more inclusive, gender equal world. The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. This is too long to wait. Around the world, IWD can be an important catalyst and vehicle for driving greater change for women.Below are a selection of our registered charities who focus their efforts on helping women and girls across the world. If you feel inspired to support the women of tomorrow, please do donate to them today or load a Work for project in support (if you have not yet done so, you’ll need create your free account first).

Plan International UK recognises the power and potential of every single child and strives to advance children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world. We work alongside children, young people, supporters and partners to tackle the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

The Microloan Foundation offers hope, not handouts. We help some of the poorest women in Malawi and Zambia to work their own way out of poverty. We do this by helping them to open a business with the support of a small loan, training and mentoring enabling these women to work themselves and their families out of poverty.

Women and Children First is an international development charity dedicated to reducing the unacceptably high number of mostly avoidable deaths. In some parts of the world, one in every eight women dies during pregnancy or childbirth. Working mainly with women’s groups in rural communities in the poorest communities in Africa and Asia, we empower women and communities to find their own solutions to maternal, newborn and child health problems.

Emerge Poverty Free believes that investing in women and girls in East Africa is critical to building strong communities independent from aid. We are working to save lives of mothers and babies with our Safe Birth Project in Uganda. We partner with local organisations to provide sustainable solutions to poverty, training community midwives and parents, and preventing infections through safe birth kits.
