Meet the UK chef helping to feed hungry school kids in 18 countries
School dinners might evoke nostalgia in some of us — and perhaps a feeling of ‘never again’ for others — so it’s easy to forget just how many kids across the world don’t get a solid meal to help them through their school day.
But one UK chef is doing his bit to change that — by teaming up with an international charity to get tummies full and brains learning, in some of the poorest areas of the world.
That chef is Mitch, one half of the growing plant-based meal delivery business Mitch’s Kitchen. Together, Mitch and his wife Shirin are on a mission to share their delicious vegan, nut-free meals with the nation, and provide wholesome, quality food that’s good for the planet.
Having learned his vegan cheffing skills working with restaurant brand Offbeet, Mitch took up the plant-based lifestyle and started cooking amazing meals at home with Shirin.
Fuelled by their passion for spreading the joy of nutritiously good food, Mitch and Shirin thought “If only we had a kitchen table big enough. How can we share this with more people?”.
Their business now delivers fab plant-based meals to all corners of the UK, but for Mitch and Shirin this wasn’t enough.
“We wanted to support a cause that meant our customers would be donating a meal for each meal they purchase, 1 for 1 and could truly see the great impact we are able to make together.”
Donating one meal for every meal they sold was quite the ambitious target — but with the help of international charity Mary’s Meals, Mitch’s Kitchen are making it happen.
Mary’s Meals have a simple vision — that every child should receive one daily meal in their place of education. Starting with a single donation of food and supplies during the Bosnian War in 1992, the Scotland-based charity focuses on making sure that even in the poorest areas of the world, chronically hungry children are able to attend school and get a nutritious meal to keep them healthy, energised and able to learn.
Mary’s Meals are now feeding 1,504,471 of the world’s poorest children every day they attend school. Their simple but effective approach has gathered momentum and today they serve children across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America.
“When we first discovered Mary’s Meals, we were inspired but the incredible work they do in some of the world’s poorest communities. By providing meals every school day in their place of education, Mary’s Meals is ensuring children are able to focus on their studies energised by a nutritious meal and work towards a brighter future.”
Since teaming up with Mary’s Meals through business donations platform Work for Good, Mitch’s Kitchen have managed to donate an incredible 3,000 meals to hungry school kids across the world — a huge success for a small business!
For many growing businesses who want to be a force for good, giving to charity early in their business journey might seem like a risk — but Mitch and Shirin are a perfect example of how easy it can be to start making a difference, even as they continue the hard work of keeping their business afloat.
Plus, by linking their donations to each meal they sell, Mitch’s Kitchen make it super easy for their customers to feel involved in their charity work — while they enjoy a delicious, sustainable vegan meal, they know that a child somewhere in the world will benefit from their purchase too.
