International Women’s Day: How Businesses Can Make a Difference Through Work for Good

Written by: Kate Hillier

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and champion gender equality. Across the UK, countless charities are making a profound difference in communities - supporting women’s rights, tackling period poverty, empowering survivors of domestic abuse, and creating opportunities for the next generation.

At Work for Good, we’re proud to have many incredible charities on our platform that are founded, led or have a focus on women. This International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting the power of partnership between businesses and charities and how SMEs can make a tangible impact by supporting causes that uplift women and girls.

The Power of Women in the Nonprofit Sector

Did you know that women make up two thirds of the nonprofit sector?

Charities play a crucial role in tackling some of society’s most pressing issues. Often, charity workforces bring lived experience, deep community understanding, and innovative solutions to challenges affecting women and marginalized groups. Some of the incredible causes supported by businesses on Work for Good include:

  • TreeSisters - Their mission is to fund ethical, community-led planting projects that take direct climate action, empower women and champion local and indigenous communities.
  • Bloody Good Period – They give period products to those who can’t afford them and provide reproductive health education to those less likely to access it.
  • Women’s Aid - A grassroots federation working together to provide life-saving services and build a future where domestic violence is not tolerated.

These organisations are driving change - but they need ongoing support to continue their work.

Businesses have a unique opportunity to support charities, not just on International Women’s Day, but year-round. Through Work for Good, SMEs can embed giving into their business model in a simple, legal, and impactful way. Here’s how:

  1. Make a Sales Donation – Donate a percentage of sales from a product or service to a charity that aligns with your business values.
  2. Raise Awareness – Use your platform to amplify the voices of women-focused charities by sharing their stories and impact.
  3. Encourage Collaboration – Partner with charities to create meaningful campaigns that engage your customers and employees.

Together, We Can Drive Change

Supporting women-focused charities isn’t just about philanthropy - it’s about creating a fairer, more inclusive society where women and girls can thrive. By using business as a force for good, SMEs can help sustain the vital work these charities do.
