Charities to put on your Christmas list in December 2019

The idea of donating to charity at Christmas time is nothing new. In fact, it’s the busiest season for charitable giving and with good reason. Indulgent meals and time spent with family coupled with freezing cold nights inevitably spark contrast with those who don’t have a warm home to get to.

If you’re planning to donate to a worthwhile cause, perhaps you need some inspiration as to who? Below are some Work for Good charity members focused on tackling homelessness who would be delighted to receive your support.

Social Bite

Positioned in central Edinburgh, Alice and John saw homeless people every day. It seemed only natural to offer free food and hot drinks from their sandwich shop, and then one guy asked for a job. They thought: “why not?” and things took off from there. Alice and John now run the Social Bite Academy which enables the employment of people affected by homelessness (35 in 2019) and also supports homeless people to volunteer.

They also distribute more than 140,000 items of healthy, free food via their five cafes each year and their weekly Social Supper events connect 400 vulnerable people every week with food, support and opportunities.

The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields

London’s busiest homelessness centre. The Connection supports 4000 people a year to move away from and stay off the streets through specialist services which help people cope with the physical and psychological crisis of being homeless, while getting to the root cause of why someone ended up on the streets.

Their holistic approach supports people to rebuild their lives so they have viable alternatives to rough sleeping.

Only A Pavement Away

Only A Pavement Away (OAPA) supports the employment of vulnerable people into careers in the hospitality industry and was inspired by Greg & Gill Mangham’s refusal to accept that all people who are homeless or rough sleepers were in these situations due to some fault of their own or through some form of addiction.

OAPA act as the conduit between forward thinking employers who have access to the charity’s jobs board and the charities and organisations who support the homeless, ex-offenders and vulnerable veterans.

It’s a sad testament to the enormity of the homelessness crisis that we have many other charities working in this area on Work for Good including Crisis, Centre Point and End Youth Homelessness. Check out our charities page and use the ‘Homeless/Refuge’ or ‘Accommodation & Housing’ filters to view more.

If a homelessness charity (or any other) you love isn’t on our platform already, why not give them a nudge to sign up? We’d love to help them. And if you’ve been inspired to support these fantastic charities through your business, please subscribe to Work for Good (it’s free) and set up a donation here . We’re doubling donations received throughout December as part of our Christmas Campaign!
