The Giving Guide
Your small business can make a big difference - 5 steps to get you started
Thank you for joining the Work for Good community and being part of the growing number of small businesses who want to give back by supporting a charity through their work.
We set up Work for Good to help charities raise even more money by making it easy for small businesses to donate - legally. With no minimum donation requirements and by linking donations to your sales you can give as you grow, which makes it accessible for any size business to donate within minutes.
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAUSE AND CHARITY
Who you choose to support will say something about your business, so it’s important to select a cause and charity that reflects your business values.
You can choose from hundreds of charities: from small, local ones to national and international organisations. If the charity you're looking to support is not listed, you can nominate them and we'll get them on board.
2. PLEDGE YOUR DONATION AND CREATE THE VERY IMPORTANT COMMERCIAL PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT
It’s quick and easy to pledge a donation. Just complete the donations form and this will form your Commercial Participation Agreement with the charity, which is a legal requirement when a business wants to link donations to sales and publicise their giving.
As part of the Commercial Participation Agreement and in line with Charity law, you must state at the point of sale (e.g on your website or on/ next to your products) exactly how funds will be generated, how much you will be donating of the sale or service and for whom you are raising money. You will also need to state that you are doing this via Work for Good.
Here is a template statement that can be copied and adapted for this purpose: '(insert £/% amount) of (this product/every product) will be donated to (insert name of charity) via Work for Good.'
For example: On a t-shirt product page, you would state: ‘10% of the sale of this t-shirt will go to [INSERT CHARITY NAME] via Work for Good’. See how Three Point Brewing are informing their customers.
3. PUBLICISE YOUR SUPPORT
Once you have set up your donation and completed the Commercial Participation Agreement, you'll then be able to proudly state that you're supporting your chosen charity in plain text. Additionally, you will be able to display the Work for Good logo, which gives you a way to demonstrate your values to your customers or clients (please remember that you’re unable to use the charity’s logo, see our FAQ’s page for more information). You can download all of our assets to help you publicise this on your website and across your social media platforms.
4. CREATE YOUR PUBLIC PROFILE
Update your profile to showcase what your business does and why you think it’s important to give back. Not only is it great for SEO, but you can share it with your customers to let them know that they’re buying from or working with a company that has a social purpose, and how much you've raised so far.
Here are some examples of how other businesses are publicising their giving: Pattie & Co, Mitch's Kitchen and Peggy Porschen.
5. REFER ANOTHER BUSINESS AND WE’LL DONATE ON YOUR BEHALF
Currently, charities receive just 2% of their income from businesses, compared to 43% from individuals. Work for Good’s mission is to move the needle on this and we need your help!
Please help us spread the word and encourage more businesses to donate through their work. Ask any business you refer to mention your business' name when they sign up and as a thank you, we'll donate £5 to a charity of your choice when they make their first donation.
