How the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) are emergency appeal ready.
Our existing partnerships with platforms such as Work for Good mean that DEC Appeals raise funds quickly, efficiently and at scale. Alerting them is a vital step in our journey to being appeal ready when disasters hit.
About the DEC
When large-scale disasters hit countries without the capacity to respond, the DEC brings together 15 leading aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently.
The challenge
In March 2022 crisis hit in Ukraine and the DEC launched their Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Almost immediately, the Philanthropy and Partnerships team were inundated with requests from businesses wanting to support the appeal through sales fundraising.
To be legally compliant, the team at the DEC had to ensure a Commercial Participation Agreement (CPA) was created with each business.
A CPA can take time to facilitate, typically resulting in sales fundraising being an unsuitable source of emergency income.
The solution
The DEC have been using Work for Good for their emergency appeals since 2018 and were ready to steward these businesses via Work for Good as soon as the crisis hit. Within minutes, supporters could fulfil the legal requirements by creating their CPA via the online donations form (see below).
The results
When launching major fundraising campaigns, having time and cost efficient processes already in place is crucial for charities to ensure resources are used effectively.
By building relationships with partners like Work for Good in advance, the DEC guarantees that responses to vital fundraising opportunities are optimised and streamlined.
As a result, they were able to maximise this sales fundraising support and welcome much-needed income from businesses of all sizes and in just three months they raised £350,000 through sales fundraising campaigns.
We have been completely overwhelmed by the support given to the appeal, from businesses both big and small. It has been incredible to see the UK business community coming together for the people of Ukraine.
Charity champions
With Work for Good ready and able to give essential support and provide a legally compliant CPA solution, the DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal benefited from valuable income from multiple businesses including Brewdog, Patisserie Valerie and ATG Tickets in addition to smaller enterprises such as Little Pig Jewellery who have so far raised over £680 in just three months.
Brewdog donated all revenue from their United for Ukraine beer to the DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Raising over.
Patisserie Valerie raised over £16,000 for the DEC by donating £1 from every online order from mid-March to end of April.
KKC Productions put on a gala performance of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, raising funds by donating all ticket sales to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal - along with the money raised from collection buckets. In total they donated over £36,175.
