About us
By many measures, Hackney is one of the most deprived boroughs in the UK: 41% of Hackney's children are growing up on, or below the poverty line (Hackney’s Child Poverty and Family Wellbeing Plan 2016-18). Hackney is also identified as the 11th most deprived borough in the indices of multiple deprivation. Many children in Hackney face multiple barriers including poor quality living environments, overcrowded housing, high rates of crime and unemployment. Almost 20% of Hackney’s young people are obese and a further 35% overweight.
Our vision is to empower multiply disadvantaged children and young people to beat financial, social and academic barriers so that they can have a great childhood and a healthy transition into adulthood and have the tools to break free from the vicious intergenerational cycle of poverty, unemployment and low aspirations. We also aim to strengthen the young family unit which is the best way of ensuring that children's’ physical, emotional and academic needs are met at a holistic and natural level.
We are a dynamic, user-led charity with six year track record of empowering socially excluded and disadvantaged children and young people. To date we have supported over 1500 users and demand for our services is increasing 19% annually. Our work has been visited and supported by Hackney Council, Childhood Trust, BBC children in need, Hackney Parochial Charity, London Community Foundation among many other reputable community bodies.
As a frontline grassroots organisation we have our pulse on users needs and have earned their trust and built great rapport. Our trustees live locally and have all grown up in poverty or alongside poverty. Our Trustees are dynamic and dedicated individuals who are experienced in entrepreneurship, community work, charitable activities, business and leadership. Our Trustees give up their valuable time to support Young and Inspired’s work and have a collective responsibility to ensure the proper administration of the charity. They ensure our resources are used as efficiently and effectively as possible to further Young and Inspired’s objects as set out in our governing document.
