About us
The Yard is a multi-award winning theatre located in Hackney Wick, Tower Hamlets. Conceived and founded by Artistic Director, Jay Miller in 2011, it was built in a converted warehouse using reclaimed materials from the nearby Olympic Park by a team of 50 volunteers, and has grown from a temporary 'pop-up' space into "the most important theatre in East London" (Time Out).
The Yard is a space to explore new ideas, to nurture new talent and to share new experiences. We create opportunities for new artists to develop their work and provide a cultural offer to the residents of Hackney Wick and Fish Island, with a particular focus on young people aged 5 - 19.
“The Yard is a fantastic new venue. It gives young artists the kind of opportunities that can transform their careers. And it gives its audiences a wonderful night out. It feels like the future.” - Sir Nicholas Hytner
As a result of our success and commitment to our local community over the past six years, in 2016 we were chosen by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) to manage Hub67, a community centre that provides a space for local residents to call their own and host a range of activities. As a result of our success, in 2019 we were entrusted by East Village Trust to manage a new community space, The Hall, in neighbouring Stratford.
With your support, we can:
-
Provide free, weekly, term-time drama-based clubs and workshops to 80 young people aged 5 - 19 through Yard Young Artists
-
Support over 300 local school children to see award-winning theatre in specially curated field trips for as little as £5 per ticket
-
Identify and nurture the theatre artists of tomorrow, commissioning them to create plays that tell vital, urgent stories
-
Turn our Hub67 and The Hall into thriving community centres, reaching over 6,000 local residents through free, arts-based activity all year round
"During the rapid regeneration of East London, The Yard is crucial to creating cohesive a community" Dr Paul Brickell, London Legacy Development Corporation
