About us

Leprosy is an ancient disease that many people believe was eradicated years, if not centuries ago. In fact, today, 1 person every 2 minutes is diagnosed with leprosy around the world.

The Leprosy Mission Scotland is part of a global partnership of organisations working to end leprosy for good.

To eradicate leprosy it is vital that it is spotted quickly so that people affected can avoid the worst effects of the disease and to prevent them from becoming a source of infection in their community.

It has to be treated fast so the people can be cured before they go on to develop long term disfigurements or disability. For those whose leprosy has already led to further complications, each of these need to be treated fully, sometimes for years.

Finally it needs to be stopped from spreading, both by preventing people from becoming infectious in the first place and by researching new preventative drugs or vaccines that will stop it taking hold in a community.

Your support will help to spot, treat and stop leprosy. You will help people affected to be able to lead healthy, safe and dignified lives.
