On Wednesday 17^th November 2021 at 9.00am – 10.30am, STEM Learning will be holding a virtual business breakfast. We will be revisiting the theme of diversity and inclusion but this time with a focus on SEND

Summary

This breakfast session will enable those who attend to:

• gain a greater understanding of the struggles young people living with SEND and the schools they attend face

• hear about how STEM Learning and our partners can support business to understand the complexities and the opportunities that engaging with SEND pupils can bring

• learn how employers can engage through our various programmes – Ambassadors, ENTHUSE Partnerships etc. as well as their own initiatives to engage and inspire these young people as to the possibilities STEM subjects and careers can bring

• To understand the value of engaging with SEND pupils and to recognise that ‘aspiration’ is as important to SEND pupils as it is to any other young person

Our strategic vision is for every young person to receive a world-leading STEM education, one that engages and nurtures their unique talents and provides the knowledge and skills they will need to participate fully as the creators and citizens of tomorrow. A world-leading STEM education has economic, social, cultural and ethical value with positive impacts on social mobility, and promotes equality in future careers. It combines: knowledge-rich and effective teaching; thinking, investigative, creative and practical skills with experiences which develop a lifelong love for STEM and the opportunities it opens up. STEM subjects are a driver of change in the lives of many young people globally. However, in common with other developed economies, the UK struggles to attract sufficient young people to study STEM subjects, either at university or through apprenticeship routes, and there is a particular problem engaging those from less privileged backgrounds. We also need to tackle the barriers to young people’s engagement in STEM: ensuring parity in opportunities for STEM across the UK; targeting support for schools in disadvantaged areas; encouraging a more diverse and inclusive landscape to attract more young people to feel that STEM subjects and careers are ‘right’ for them, by building “science capital” in underprivileged young people. Our objectives are to raise young people's attainment in, awareness of and enthusiasm for STEM subjects and careers. This is achieved through improvements in the quality of STEM teaching - enabling science teachers to enhance their professional skills, learn more about contemporary scientific ideas, undergo training in effective teaching approaches and gain experience of modern scientific techniques. Investing in teachers makes sense, as each teacher will teach thousands of students over their career. The charity provides bursaries to enable teachers, from all over the UK and across all phases of education, including those from the most disadvantaged areas, to choose from a wide range of CPD opportunities, tailored to meet the needs of the individual, from the extensive programme that is available throughout the year
