A new home for AET with community and youth facilities
For the last ten years, we have operated out of a garden garage in Dorset. This has been excellent in that overheads have been tiny, enabling us to spend very high proportions of every penny raised on our work across the UK.
2019 is our 10th anniversary and we have been given the wonderful opportunity to build a ‘Pavilion in the Park’ which will include a café, community/training space and office on The Great Field at Poundbury, Dorchester which is an area with 33% social housing.
The Alcohol Education is half way to raising the £150,000 (plus VAT) needed to finance the build of the ‘Pavilion in the Park’. This does not include fixtures and fittings such as the kitchen, chairs and tables or flooring.
We hope that building will begin in autumn this year with completion being in spring 2020.
What is our vision for the space and what impact the will it have on the community?

This provision will also provide diversionary activities for young people to promote healthier alternatives and help avoid boredom which can lead to risk taking.
-
By providing loos and a safe dry space the park will be used much more by people of all ages
-
The café will offer training and work opportunities for young people.
-
With its proximity to a local first school, parents and young children will have loos and a dry space for refreshments and activities enabling them to get out more and use the park for longer keeping all the family fitter and healthier and encouraging walking to school even more.
-
It will provide a focus for the community with space for after school and holiday clubs, arts and craft activities
-
The existing all weather surface area will be used much more if a social space for young people to meet before/afterwards is there or if the weather deteriorates.
-
The café would like to host a wide range of activities including supper clubs, cultural events, family-friendly outdoor events in the summer, wildlife spotting maps.
-
The community space will provide a flexible affordable space available for hire at subsidised rates for charities and Voluntary Groups.

AET plans exciting new office and community space
On the 16th January Helena Conibear, CEO of The Alcohol Education Trust, presented to 20 businesses from across Dorset on the exciting project of building a revenue generating community hub for the charity on the Great Field at Poundbury. For the last nine years the AET have operated out of a garden garage!
The café, public loos, community space and office the AET will be in park setting with a priority for youth and healthy lifestyles. It will act as a 'hub' being located next to a first school, within five minutes walk of one of the largest comprehensive schools in the UK in an area with 33% social housing. There is no youth provision in the area at present and the AET will not only offer youth employment opportunities but hopes to host a youth club and park events for teenagers.
