About us
Since its establishment in 2010, the Sustainable Food Trust has played an important role in mobilising the international agriculture agenda and is now on the tipping point of even greater influence. Our role has developed in recent years, from an organisation calling out and working on issues considered peripheral by many, to operating at the heart of what have become mainstream discussions around the sustainability of food and farming; guiding decision-making and holding businesses and governments to account.
We are in a uniquely strong position to accelerate change thanks to our high-level network of contacts within a wide range of relevant sectors (including farming, agribusiness, finance, research and the media) and the authority and influence that we derive from hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of sustainable farming practices, policy, and research, accumulated over many years working in the field.
We have built our international influence and reputation by delivering ground-breaking collaborative projects, including: catalysing the international movement on true cost accounting; leading the conversation around the importance of common metrics for measuring on-farm sustainability; and facilitating the initiation of influential collaborations such as the Global Alliance for the Future of Food and the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI).
Accelerating the transition to sustainable agriculture can only be achieved by ensuring the food and farming system is viewed as a whole with the challenges in each area recognised and worked on collectively through the strong partnerships we have developed.
Our work is based upon three key pillars: farming policy, finance and practice; measuring and valuing sustainability; and education and awareness raising. We undertake research in these key areas to develop a fuller understanding of the issues facing the UK and have released three key reports highlighting the challenges: including how we can sustainably feed Britain; the use of antibiotics, the decline of local abattoirs, measuring sustainability and sustainable livestock.
All of these reports can be found on our website alongside our podcast where the challenges and opportunities of food and farming are discussed with a variety of individuals from all over the world. https://sustainablefoodtrust.org
