Research reveals 192% increase in the number of children on the streets
S.A.L.V.E. International conducted head counting research in 2023 to establish the number of children on the streets of Jinja, Uganda.
A previous count had been done in 2017 and, using the similar methodology, this was re-done in January and February of 2023. The latest head count showed:
An estimated 11,516 children were living and working on the streets of Jinja at the start of 2023
This is a 192% increase from the figures from 2017
Children on the streets of Jinja are now as young as three years old
32% of the children on the streets were girls and 68% were boys
14% of the children were sleeping openly on the streets, 16% were staying in child-headed households (insecure houses typically in slum areas without adult care) and 69% were staying with an adult relative and coming to the streets to make money or find food

Help street connected children get an education and give them a brighter future
We need your help to enable street-connected children in Uganda to have a brighter future by getting an education: https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/brighterfutures
he last few years have been hard on us all. But did you know that children in Uganda were kept out of school the longest of any country in the world due to COVID-19? This means they have missed out on vital years of studying since they don’t have access to online learning opportunities.
The children we support at S.A.L.V.E. have already missed out on going to school because of living on the streets, so they are now at a double disadvantage.
The pandemic and cost of living crisis has also led to some of our kind hearted educational sponsors sadly having to stop their support.
So we currently have 36 children who don't have an Educational Sponsor, but want to realise their dreams of gaining an education. 13 of these children are supported by donations into our Education Fund, but that still leaves 26 children who need your help.
It will cost £7,980 to send these 26 children to school for one year.
We have a long term commitment to supporting these children and so it is hoped that within this year we can look for sustainable ways to continue to support them going forward, such as:
-
Empowering their families to gradually begin to pay their children's school fees, through our Business Training programme
-
Seeking new Education Sponsors for these children to get and education
-
Gaining more supporters for our Education Fund which will help more children realise their dreams
While we are aiming to raise £7,980, we have a further 41 children who are desperate to re-join school but currently we are not in a position to be able to help. So if we are able to surpass our £7,980 target thanks to your generosity, then we would also help as many of these children as we can to return to education
Please help us however you can. Whether this is a one off donation to help us pay for their fees for now or a monthly donation to invest in children's education for the future through our Education Fund or individual Child Sponsorship.
We will be very grateful for whatever support you feel able to give to ensure that children who lived on the streets get the chance of a brighter future.
