About us
So They Can is an impactful international NGO delivering education and empowerment programs in some of the most marginalised communities in East Africa.
Working in Kenya and Tanzania, we partner with communities and their governments to educate children so that they can break the poverty cycle, unleash their potential and go on to empower their whole community. Our Community Development Program is delivered in parallel to our Education Program, to focus on improving the health, wellbeing and livelihoods of all community members.
Founded in Australia in 2009, So They Can has grown to be an alliance of six entities registered in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Tanzania, and the US. So They Can has in-country offices in 3 project areas - Babati in Tanzania, and Baringo and Nakuru in Kenya.
100% of our teams in Africa are national staff and trusted by communities. They work in partnership with a network of key stakeholders (respected leaders in their communities) and a network of 150 trained Champion local Mothers and Fathers in schools’ villages to help educate their own communities on key issues, harnessing their collective capacity to bring about meaningful change.
So They Can is fully accredited by the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), responsible for managing the Australian Government’s Development Program. This is a significant recognition, which is based on rigorous assessment and is given to less than 1% of Australia's 60,000 charities, listed here. It acknowledges that So They Can operates at the highest standard to effectively deliver sustainable development outcomes.
