Help us raise £100,000 to understand how seagrass responds to climate change and put that knowledge to work protecting and restoring our ocean.
Seagrass meadows are extraordinary places. They shelter young fish, support coastal livelihoods, help stabilise the seabed and store carbon. But the changing climate threatens their future, bringing new challenges to the communities and wildlife that depend on them.
At Project Seagrass, we’re working to understand what helps these underwater meadows survive, what pushes them beyond their limits, and how we can give restoration the best chance of lasting.
Our research is already showing why this matters. In North Wales, our work has identified how a marine heatwave, alongside other environmental pressures, likely contributed to the loss of newly restored seagrass. Understanding these setbacks helps us make better decisions about where, when and how to restore meadows.

Learning what helps seagrass survive
We are studying seagrass in challenging environments, including the Inland Sea in Wales, to understand how it copes with changing conditions. These places act as natural laboratories, helping us investigate why some meadows persist and what we can learn from them.
Following change over time
By surveying seagrass and measuring the conditions around it, we can track how meadows grow, decline and recover. Combining observations in the water with longer-term environmental records helps us understand the effects of extreme events and identify places where restoration has a better chance of success.
Understanding pressures together
Seagrass experiences warming alongside other pressures, including poor water quality and changes in light and salinity. We need to understand how these interact, and where reducing local pressures could give meadows a better chance of coping with climate change.
Turning evidence into action
We use what we learn to improve site selection, adapt restoration methods and guide conservation. Sharing that knowledge with communities, scientists and restoration teams helps the benefits reach beyond our own projects.

This is patient, practical work. It means returning to sites, learning from successes and setbacks, and following recovery over years. That commitment is essential if the meadows we protect and restore today are to support marine life for generations to come.
