Supporting those born with microtia during the pandemic

Supporting those born with microtia during the pandemic

Our charity found that those born with microtia were struggling to wear the standard facemasks that you can buy online or from the shops. The problem with these masks, was that they did not fit or attach around the ears as microtia results in underdeveloped or missing ears - making it impossible for adults and children to wear a mask.

We knew how important it was to provide a solution and we were able to find two wonderful volunteers that created face masks that would fit for those born with microtia, as they tie around the head, bypassing the ears completely. These ladies have not charged for their labour and as a charity we have paid for the costs of the material/elastic and the postage so that we could provide them to families FREE of charge. We have had just under 100 orders in 4 weeks which is incredible! We wanted to be able to continue our support to the wider microtia community and this is still ongoing.

Supporting children and their families whilst the schools are closed

Supporting children and their families whilst the schools are closed

During the pandemic our charity, Microtia UK, wanted to try and do something to support the children within our community, and their families, as their schools remained closed. We teamed up with The Strings Club which offered our charity a 30 minute online zoom session every week since April. Since the first session, we have had regular positive feedback from the parents, telling us how much their children enjoyed the fun sessions and that they couldn't wait to join in again. The wonderful thing about the musical sessions is that the children don't even need an instrument to join in. It is packed full of fun games, dancing, musical statues, name that tune, clap along and so much more! We even got our charity mascot involved on zoom! Despite schools reopening to some, we are continuing this lovely working relationship with The Strings Club as we still have many families who thoroughly enjoy joining the sessions each week. They have been a lifeline for children and their families within our charity, giving them a chance to see others born with microtia and most importantly, giving them something educational and fun to look forward to each week. We are here to support you.

We are looking for a grant to create a new school guide!

We are looking for a grant to help us create a new booklet which will support those who are starting nursery or school. The booklet will have lots of information that will be helpful to the parents and the teachers. It will guide them on a range of factors which you need to think about for those born with hearing loss. From positioning in class, to how to care for their hearing aid and how to engage with a teacher of the deaf.
