Massive local response to refugee emergency in Greece

A huge consignment of essential supplies is on its way from Dumfries to refugees on a Greek island.

A fire which swept through the Moria transit camp on Lesvos in September 2020has left thousands of its residents without shelter or other basic necessities.

Dumfries and Galloway charity Massive Outpouring of Love (MOOL) filled over 400 boxes with clothing donated by local people and desperately needed in Greece. Partnering with The Kindness Mission Association based in Dundee meant that a full container could be shipped and an appeal for funds to cover MOOL's share of transportation costs raised the required amount within three days.

Jay Rubinstein, volunteer coordinator for MOOL commented:

'It's beyond heartwarming that, despite the difficulties of the past few months, donations from the people of Dumfries and Galloway have continued to flood in.'

'Our wonderful volunteers worked so hard to pack boxes, in particular John Crosby whose logistical skills ensured that we made the deadline for the shipment.'

'We're also grateful to Alan Fleming and his team at Curries Solutions who provided free transport from Dumfries to Dundee and even modified the truck to accommodate our pallets.'

'It is difficult to know how to help when we see other people suffering but we believe that our donation will make a real difference to the people living in such desperate circumstances on Lesvos.'

About us

We work continuously to collect, sort and pack donated clothing and supplies to be sent to people on the refugee road. We have • funded three caravans, to go to Calais to help those in pain; • helped fund a number of volunteers to go and help directly in Calais, Dunkirk and Lesvos; • raised awareness in the community through several well attended gigs, events and parties • given talks about the crisis (and subsequent media coverage) in schools and community groups.

We have also helped welcome refugee families brought to the area through the Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme (VPRS), and MOOL volunteers have trained and become befrienders to act as a buffer between the families and the bureaucracy, and help their transition to life in rural Scotland be as gentle as it can possibly be.

MOOL want people who are displaced, including Refugees and Asylum Seekers, to be welcomed everywhere, and have consistent access to the resources, help and support they need to feel safe, healthy and able to thrive. We are encouraging Dumfries and Galloway to further develop diverse, inclusive and loving communities. It’s important to us that they have their voices heard and are fully considered when making plans for their support

We are working on a project to produce an online learning resource for schools to use to ensure students understand the specific needs of refugees, displaced people, asylum seekers and economic migrants and, as a result, have more positive attitudes towards them; see the beauty in diversity, inclusion and peace; experience fewer barriers between people of different ethnicities and faiths, and create more opportunities to interact positively together, as part of united, enhanced community.

We work with other local agencies such as the Independent Living Service to help people who have recently been rehoused in bare accommodation, giving them access to donated furniture and household goods.

We can use funds to help with the transport of donations which is a constant struggle. It costs, for example, between £6 and £10 to send a banana box to the people in Lesvos. We also need help to allow us to maintain a suitable location in Dumfries for our volunteers to work and to store the packed items for sending.
