About us
Challengers is an organisation that challenges the barriers to play for disabled children. By providing a truly inclusive environment, all disabled children and young people can enjoy play and leisure activities whilst parents can access a short break from the demands of caring.
Disabled children and young people often face barriers of social exclusion, both physically and attitudinally, and all too often find themselves isolated and alone. However, all children and young people are welcome at Challengers, and we will never exclude a child or young person because of the severity or complexity of their need, in fact we will go out of our way to provide facilities for those children who have been previously excluded elsewhere.
Challengers not only benefits the children and young people they support, but offers a monumental impact on their families. For many, it is the only opportunity to access a break from the daily demands of caring for a disabled child, and Challengers has often been described a ‘life-line’. Challengers allows families to spend time with other children or to get on with day-to-day tasks such as cleaning the house or food shopping that many of us take for granted.
“Tom adores Challengers and is free to have a wonderful time with full support in a safe environment and caring, fun staff. I get the chance to have a break about once a month on a Saturday to go shopping with no kids or meet friends for lunch. This is invaluable to my sanity. I can’t imagine a future without the support of Challengers. ”
