About us

Cherished by many, the UK has 60 species of butterflies and around 2500 species of moths in the UK. Unfortunately, 80% of butterflies have decreased in either abundance, distribution, or both since 1976 and the total abundance of larger moths decreased by 33% between 1968-2017.

Butterfly Conservation is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to halting the rapid decline of butterflies and moths. Our vision is a world where butterflies and moths thrive and can be enjoyed by everyone, forever.

Butterfly Conservation was established in 1968. We work across all four countries of the UK to conserve and recover butterflies and moths and champion them for the benefit of nature and people. Through our groundbreaking research, dedicated nature recovery work on the ground, and extensive engagement programmes, we are tackling butterfly and moth declines across the UK and saving species from extinction. Crucial to the survival of butterflies and moths is the appropriate and sensitive management of habitat, as well as the creation of new habitat, which can provide species with the resources they need for feeding, breeding and shelter. We play a key role in ensuring the right conditions are in place for butterflies and moths to flourish, through work on our own nature reserves and that of third-party landholdings. We also show land managers what can be done and provide evidence of what is most effective.

We aim to tackle threats to species, manage land sustainably, recover butterflies and moths and connect people to nature. By supporting Butterfly Conservation you will be helping us ensure: • Butterflies and moths are increasing in abundance and diversity. • More spaces are enhanced and created where butterflies and moths can thrive. • Our science drives policy change and effective action. • More people are engaged and inspired to enjoy and take action for butterflies and moths, including through volunteering for nature.

If your business chooses to help us, you'll be supporting broad-ranging science, nature recovery and engagement work, knowing that your contribution will be spent wisely.
