We also visit schools and deliver talks and workshops. In this way, the British Brain Bee is supporting the UK Government plans to increase the number of students studying STEM subjects

Aberdeen Brain Bee 2018

For the first time ever, secondary school students from Aberdeen got a chance to show their knowledge and share their love for all things brainy!

On the 21^st of February 2018, students from Robert Gordon’s College and St Margaret’s School for Girls met at the Aberdeen Science Centre to compete against each other in a neuroscience competition, the 1^st Aberdeen Brain Bee. The day was filled with activities which tested students’ knowledge about the brain, its’ structures and functions, as well as different disorders that can affect it. Students also got an insight into the life of a neuroscientist, as well as some of the most current and vital research, thanks to incredible guest speakers.

Edinburgh Brain Bee 2018

For the first time, high school students from Lothian (Edinburgh) competed against each other on questions relating to the functionality of the brain.

The regional Brain Bee Competition, which took place on the 24 th of February (Saturday) at the University of Edinburgh, encourages participants to explore the diversity and depth of the mechanisms of the brain far beyond standard high school level and to gain experience beyond their classroom. The competition also provides opportunity to be introduced to the vibrant research community and variety of centres that make up the Edinburgh Neuroscience and are well-known for their integrated, cross-disciplinary and quality research.

British Brain Bee Charity partnership with Rogue Resolutions

Today, Rogue Resolutions and the British Brain Bee announced a partnership to advance neuroscience education in secondary schools across the UK. The organisations will collaborate to raise awareness of brain sciences and a career in medicine and scientific research among teenagers.

The initiatives will work on an exciting programme of events and activities to foster an interest of teenagers to consider pursuing neurosciences. In fact, since 2015 the British Brain Bee has been organizing an annual neuroscience competition called the British Brain Bee.

About us

The British Brain Bee charity is run only by volunteers. As we have no paid staff or an office, we work mainly remotely from different places. We have hubs in Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, Kent and London.

The Brain Bee, an international initiative that promotes neuroscience and psychology in schools, presents neuroscience in schools in a ‘cool’ way, focusing not only on theory, but also on practical aspects of science and on how various disorders affect the physiology of the brain. Tasks such as identifying neural structures on brain models and studying neurological disorders give students the opportunity to engage first-handed with a scientific topic - that they otherwise would not have had the opportunity to do so.

We provide different service for free: - to inform schools and students that an annual neuroscience competition takes place; the one-day competition will be full of free activities to explore neurosciences and psychology, meet and network with researchers, distinguished guests and peers. - to provide relevant neuroscience and psychology background information, especially focusing on guiding students and providing advice on medical, neuroscience and psychology careers. - the offer of a neuroscientist to visit their school to give a presentation on neuroscience and/or psychology that is relevant to the National Curriculum and beyond - the offer of a scientist to visit their school to give a presentation on career opportunities in Life Sciences and Medicine access to background information on neuroscience and psychology and information on careers in science access to neuroscience and psychology curriculum for secondary schools created collectively with the International Youth Neuroscience Association (IYNA) - support for local science public outreach activities - an opportunity to represent the UK in the International Brain Bee where travel and living expenses will be partially or fully covered - access to research and work experience in neuroscience and psychology labs and hospitals - mentorship

Our annual neuroscience competition for school students is comprised of 4 parts: neuroanatomy test, neurohistology test, patient diagnosis test, a written multiple-choice question exam, and a podium exam for top 10 students. Students are tested on the knowledge about the brain, neuroscience research, molecular biology and neurochemistry. The winner will advance to the International Brain Bee
