In the UK today, around 59,000 women and 420 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. 1 in 7 mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and daughters will develop the disease at some point in their lives.
But we believe in a future where fewer people have to face this devastating disease - because we know that at least 1 in 4 breast cancer cases are preventable. By making changes to modifiable lifestyle and environmental risk factors, we can drive cases down.
Our focus on prevention is unique - we are shining a light on the changes we can make at an individual and societal level to prevent breast cancer. We are working to prevent over 17,000 people each year in the UK ever having to hear the heartbreaking words 'You have breast cancer'.
To achieve this, we are building a world where:
· All people have access to evidence and support to reduce their risk - through our education programme which provides science-backed trustworthy information and guidance
· Research into the causes of breast cancer is prioritised— not just treatment. Our research programme targets the root causes of the disease - an area of research which is significantly underfunded.
· Understanding of harmful chemicals and their role in breast cancer is increased and acted upon. We run campaigns to increase public understanding of the environmental risk factors for breast cancer, and we work to influence policy-makers and industry, to protect consumers and provide safer alternatives.
· Prevention is no longer a footnote, but is central to how we confront cancer as a society. We’ve witnessed formidable advancements in treatment and care which have doubled survival rates since the early 1970s, but female breast cancer incidence rates continue to rise sharply. We won’t tackle this by only focusing on progressing early detection, treatment and care. Not all breast cancers can be avoided, but we need a united movement for prevention, to tackle this devastating disease head on.
