About us
Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) is a small charity with big ambitions. We want to see a world where deaf children have the same opportunities as their hearing peers.
The ability to communicate is vitally important. It shapes children’s educational achievement, their relationships with friends and family and affects outcomes in later life. Unfortunately, far too many deaf children in the UK are at higher risk of underachieving at school, suffering depression and social exclusion, and having lower employment prospects
That is why AVUK exists – so that families can be supported and equipped to develop their deaf child’s listening, talking and social skills. They learn what is possible; what it will take and are supported every step of the way. 80% of children who spend two years on our programme develop age-appropriate language and most go to mainstream schools. They flourish, thrive and achieve their full potential.
Sadly, less than 5% of the 7,200 deaf children in the UK who could benefit from an auditory verbal programme are currently able to do so. Our specialist team supported 160 families last year from across the UK. But there is so much more we want to do. We are the only charity in the UK providing this life-changing support and we want to transform services for deaf children so that every family who wants their child to learn to listen and talk can access support close to where they live.
AVUK does not receive any statutory funding - we are reliant on the generosity of our supporters to help deaf children learn to listen and talk and achieve their full potential.
