About us

Animal Rescue Cumbria, also known as ‘The Wainwright Shelter’, is located near Grayrigg, Kendal, and was founded in 1972. We have been rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing cats and dogs for almost 50 years.

Alfred Wainwright, who was very much a cat-lover, joined the charity in 1974 and he and his wife Betty purchased our site, Kapellan, for the Charity. Alfred Wainwright covered most of the Shelter’s costs until his death in 1991. Since then, it has been our wonderful community across Cumbria who have supported our fundraising efforts and ensured that the charity can continue to survive.

We offer a secure and caring environment for animals whose owners, for whatever reason, are unable to care for them any longer, and help our animals to find permanent, loving homes. Some of our residents need rehabilitation before moving to their forever home, and our experienced Animal Care Team work hard to give them the second chance that they deserve.
