Borough Food Cooperative joins the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project

Borough Food Cooperative joins the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project

Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg are now available to be collected and spent at the Borough Food Cooperative in Southwark, supporting families to access fresh fruit and veg in their communities.

Run by Alexandra Rose Charity, the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project launched in Southwark in 2018. Families with young children under five years old collect their vouchers every week and spend them at their local market or greengrocer on the fruit and veg of their choice. Over the last four years, 1,105 families in this area have received Rose Vouchers, with £314,454 worth of Rose Vouchers spent on fruit and veg to date.

The Food Cooperative is situated near Borough Market, launching in 2020 in response to the pandemic, and is open to all. They stock a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, which come from donations by traders in Borough Market,  The Felix Project and Fareshare.

“We’re thrilled to join the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project by setting up as a distributor and trader. We hope this will allow even more families to access fresh fruit and vegetables with a location in North Southwark and a bountiful supply of fruit and veg. Vouchers can be used on their own for fresh fruit and veg or in addition to a shop for £4.50. Our collection/registration time is currently Thursdays from 12:30-14:15 and vouchers can be used at any time the shop is open.”

Brian Cummings, Assistant Food Hub Manager, Borough Food Cooperative

The Food Cooperative joins fruit and veg traders in East Street Market and Peckham, where families can also spend their Rose Vouchers. One Rose Voucher is worth £1 and can be spent on any fruit and veg of the family’s choice.

As a Rose Voucher distributor and trader, families can collect their vouchers at the Borough Food Cooperative and can spend them at the same time. This saves the family time and the cost of travel between different locations.

“We’re delighted that the Borough Food Cooperative has joined our Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project. They are the first Food Cooperative to join the project and are a fantastic addition to our offer for families in Southwark. We look forward to working with them and helping more families to access fresh fruit and veg.”

Hannah Dakin, Operations Project Manager, Alexandra Rose Charity

Families receiving Rose Vouchers can also benefit from access to the Food Cooperative’s pantry, where for £4.50 per shop, they can purchase between £15-25 worth of groceries. The Food Cooperative operates from the crypt of St. George the Martyr Church, Borough High Street, SE1 1JA. For more information please visit: www.boroughfoodcooperative.co.uk

BBC Food & Farming Award as Community Food Champion 2021

We’d like to offer our huge congratulations to Lucy Antal, a local healthy & sustainable food advocate in Liverpool, who last month was awarded the BBC Food & Farming Award as Community Food Champion 2021. Lucy has chaired our Liverpool Rose Vouchers for Fruit and Veg Project Steering group since 2017 and has been instrumental in making the project such a success.

We’re over the moon to see Lucy’s hard work and passion recognised in this way. It could not be more deserved.

The award ceremony was featured on BBC’s The One Show and can be watched back on iPlayer.

We've been awarded Runners-up for Charity Food Campaigner of the Year

We've been awarded Runners-up for Charity Food Campaigner of the Year

We’re thrilled to be runners-up for the title of Charity Food Campaigner of the Year at this year’s Caroline Walker Trust Awards.

The need for the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg project has never been greater. We've made it our top priority to get Rose Vouchers into families hands, so they had the spending power to buy the fruit and veg they needed, throughout these difficult times.

Caroline Walker pioneered innovative strategies for improving the quality of our food, enhancing nutritional standards and promoting public health. It’s wonderful to have our work recognised by this fantastic organisation. We will continue to strive to give many more thousands of families around the UK access to fresh fruit and veg in their communities.

Congratulations to award winners Edinburgh Community Food too!

“We’re delighted to be announced as the Runner Up in the Caroline Walker Trust Charity Food Campaigner of the Year 2021. Over the last 18 months, we’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that families with young children can access fresh fruit & veg in their communities. It’s been a challenging time, but we’re proud of what we’ve managed to achieve. To get this acknowledgement from Caroline Walker Trust means a lot, not only to the staff of Alexandra Rose Charity but also to all of our project partners who support the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project across the UK. Without their hard work and dedication, we could not have achieved our impact.” Jonathan Pauling, Chief Executive, Alexandra Rose Charity
