About us
MEP is an award winning educational charity working at grassroots level in Myanmar and along the Thai/Myanmar border. Set up by British and Burmese practicing teachers, over the last 20 years we have developed a unique, tried and tested model of sustainable, replicable teacher training. Using a programme of customised training and in-class support, delivered by mobile units of local trainers, MEP works with teachers in marginalised and hard to reach communities who provide education for some of the most disadvantaged children in Myanmar.
In addition, our flagship “Cambridge Plus” teacher training programme provides a rare opportunity for refugee and migrant teachers to take Cambridge English courses and gain a highly valued internationally accredited Cambridge English Certificate, thereby significantly improving their life chances. This programme is distinct in that it establishes a cohort of trained local trainers who continue training teachers long after the project ends, ensuring local ownership of a sustainable programme.
Our programmes have a significant impact on the teaching culture in the communities in which we work where a reliance on traditional teaching methods that use recall and rote learning can cause children to become disengaged and bored, affecting attendance and dropout rates. This typically leads to poor education outcomes for children, severely affecting their life chances and leaving children vulnerable to exploitation including child trafficking. Since 2011, we have been directly involved in the training of almost 2,000 teachers, produced text books now used by up to 18,000 children have taken 350 teachers through Cambridge exams.
The inadequate nature of teacher training and the recognition by education providers in Myanmar of the effectiveness of MEP’s model, mean there is an increasing demand for our services.
