Lightyear Foundation believes science education is vital for all children. It complements children’s natural curiosity, teaches them about the world around them and develops key skills such as problem solving and perseverance. It also creates the scientists of tomorrow to advance our world and solve problems.
Lightyear exists to make science education as accessible as possible for children in the UK, so that all children have the opportunity to explore, get excited by, and gain a deeper understanding of science. We are on a mission to ensure that science is a part of every child’s life, regardless of ability or social background.
We focus our efforts on disabled children. We believe it is vital to break down the barriers to STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) for those with SEN (Special Educational Needs). Our flagship programme is Sensory Science; an immersive and creative experience that uses entertaining science experiments to inspire disabled children to learn science while providing practical knowledge to improve their lives. We also showcase Sensory Science to champion those with SEN being able to access STEMM education and careers. We have a Role Model programme to showcase inspiring disabled STEMM professionals, and we also run Work Inspiration Days, to give disabled young people a taste of what the STEMM industry has to offer.
