The Nestling Trust UK Charity brings much needed basic health care and health education to remote village areas of Nepal, where no such medical facilities existed before. It works especially in areas devastated by the 2015 earthquake, alongside local community groups, and in partnership with our trusted 'in country' non government partners organisations.

We made it to Kathmandu .... and raised £11,445!

Supporters of the The Nestling Trust, including 'walkers and bikers' in the UK, New Zealand, Singapore, and the USA successfully covered 5415 miles in the month of June - the distance from Tower Bridge in London to Swayambhunath Stupa, high on a hill in Kathmandu. Funds raised are already being used to vaccinate over 65's in rural Nepal against Covid. The Health Clinics at Melung, Bhirkot and Marbu, funded and established by the Nestling Trust in coordination with SITARA Nepal and the Nepal Ministry of Health, are helping with the rollout of the Coronavirus immunisation programme. Prior to the foundation of the clinics, villagers in these remote areas had no medical facilities. Nepal is now facing a third wave of the Coronavirus which has swept throughout the country with rural areas suffering especially badly.

'TNT' is hugely grateful to all our generous supporters who have helped us provide basic healthcare and health education to 30,000 people living within the areas of our five Health Clinics.

'In other news' - work is well advanced on our most ambitious health project yet - the construction of a new Health and Birthing Centre in Baiteshwor Municipality. When complete, the centre will provide local health and birth facilities for up to 15,000 people. It comes at a time of desperate need. 'The Lancet' recently reported that since the start of the pandemic the neonatal death rate in Nepal has tripled with 40 deaths in every 1000 live births. Pregnant women currently have to trek many hours or days across mountainous terrain to reach medical care. Urgent appeal launched - as Indian covid variant spreads to Nepal

Nepal which borders India has seen a huge surge in Covid-19 cases reported in the Kathmandu Valley. The Nepal Government has announced prohibitory measures to restrict movement across the country, in a bid to curb the rampant spread of the virus. However, it has been reported in the Kathmandu Post and Himalayan Times that crowds are fleeing from the capital, back to their villages. The increasing risk of widespread infection is grave, and especially so in remote villages without even basic healthcare.

The Nestling Trust has established 5 Health Clinics in the remote villages of the Dolakha region thanks to the donations from our generous supporters - please help us to do more at this time of crisis.

About us

The Nestling Trust ('TNT') was founded in 2013, by Wiltshire Community Nurse Sue Hamblin, with the initial goal of creating a safe home for destitute, trafficked, and abused children in Nepal. The home (near Pokhara) was successfully completed in 2018 and now provides a caring and nurturing environment for 12 young girls. Together with the provision of education, life and vocational skills, the home is helping transform the lives of those who have suffered unspeakable traumas and abuse. 'TNT' provides continuing support and closely monitors the welfare of the children.

In rural Nepal many areas are without medical facilities, neonatal and maternal death rates remain extremely high and are of major concern, 1 in every 16 children does not survive to their 5^th birthday. In response to the obvious need, the trust has moved forward to focus on providing basic health care and health education to those living in remote mountain villages with no local access to medical facilities. It has successfully established 5 health posts, in the Dolakha district, so that local people (including the sick, expectant mothers, children and the elderly) no longer have to trek many miles over difficult terrain to obtain assistance. The 5 health facilities in the remote villages serve approximately 30,000 people, providing services that include immunisation against infectious diseases, wound care, treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, contraception, and antenatal and post-natal care. During the Covid pandemic, the health clinics were key in helping to reduce the spread of the infection, the Trust and its partners acted quickly to source and deliver Personal Protective Equipment to its health clinics and supported them with necessary equipment to prepare isolation areas, distribution of the vaccine and provision of soap and hand washing equipment for the needy.

Our current project to help reduce neonatal and maternal death rates is a Health and Birthing Centre in the remote Baitshwor region. Completed in 2023, it serves approximately 12,000 people living in this mountainous region of Dolakha. Funding is still required for laboratory equipment and to staff the Centre fully.

To ensure the sustainability of our projects The Nestling Trust works in collaboration with the Nepalese government.

The funds we raise go directly to our projects in Nepal. Our charity is run on a voluntary basis, with no personal expenses such as air fares, use of cars, telephones etc or salaries claimed.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our Vision For the people living in remote rural Nepal to have access to basic health care and health education within ½ hour walk of their homes.

Our Mission To facilitate the construction of village health clinics, to equip and staff them, and to ensure their long term sustainability.

Our Goals To facilitate access to basic health care especially for women and children, where none exists currently. To ensure provision of health care basics including immunisation against infectious diseases, wound care, treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, contraception, and antenatal and post-natal care. To offer basic health education - to include hygiene, nutrition, family planning, sexual health, smoking cessation, and drug and alcohol use.

Participation - empowering the resourceful and skilled local population to take a central role in the planning, construction and running of clinics.

Partnership - Promoting the role of women in working alongside local village development committees, trusted and proven Nepalese agencies, and statutory health services in planning and establishing new services.
