Introducing our first business supporter, Gift Wild!

About us

Our vision is a world where butterflies and moths thrive, and can be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.

We know nature is in crisis. Encounters with butterflies and moths are now infrequent for many people, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We are taking bold, imaginative steps to conserve our butterflies and moths. We will help to restore biodiversity, mitigate the climate crisis, and start to rebuild the vital kinship between people and the natural world. We need to unite for wildlife to save it.

We need to work in a different way to accelerate change – we can do this with our new strategy which has three ambitious goals: 1. Halve the number of the UK’s threatened species of butterflies and moths. 2. Improve the condition of 100 of the most important landscapes for butterflies and moths. 3. Transform 100,000 wild spaces in the UK for people, butterflies and moths.

We choose a positive future, where land use is more sustainable, where we have recovered populations of threatened species and restored abundant nature, where butterflies and moths thrive alongside people. By doing this we seek to connect people to nature. Butterflies and moths are a vital part of our wildlife heritage and are valuable as sensitive indicators of the health of our environment. We need to help them recover and solve the threats to nature that affect them.

We seek to create a world where butterflies and moths thrive and can be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.

We cannot do this alone: we will inspire more people from diverse backgrounds to be champions for nature, we will recover nature across whole landscapes, we will create space for nature where people live and start to rebuild the vital kinship between people and the natural world.

We have more than 40,000 members in the UK and 32 volunteer-run Branches throughout the British Isles. We employ over 80 people, including many highly qualified scientists, making us the world's largest research institute for butterflies and moths. We operate 29 nature reserves, and we are leading or involved in over 70 landscape-scale projects to conserve habitats. Our volunteers are exceptionally dedicated people. Each year over 20,000 volunteers give their time to saving butterflies and moths. It’s the equivalent of hiring an additional 1,400 full time members of staff.
