About us

Whilst I had worked full time age 15-35 my world changed when I became a single mum in 2012. Moving from paid employment and home ownership onto income support and rental property gave me a painful insight life on the other side of tax.

I pledged to donate 5% of all SMBN membership fees from 19 September 2019 to 19 November 2020 to Gingerbread. During this period, the SMBN welcomed 30 members and Gingerbread benifitted from £90. I am donating 5% of all member fees to Purple Shoots in 2021. This will run from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022. I hope that we will attract 100 new members during this period and (as annual fee has now increased to £120) purple shoots will hopefully receive £600 on 30th April 2022.

When you are a self-employed single mum in the UK, the system unwittingly holds you down. You need money for exposure and now, with UC, if you do not grow your business enough in 12 months to cover expenses and draw a full-time wage you are left high and dry. Most women in business know that it takes years to grow and be able to draw an income. These are real life Cinderella's trying to grow a business before the clock strikes 12

The primary objective of the SMBN is to help you gain exposure to your business. We concentrate on driving traffic to our members pages, so that you are seen. The secondary objective is to reduce stigma and dispel misconceptions that single mums are work shy. It is my passion to raise awareness of the real issue being that work is not in sync with school and wages are not in sync with inflation. Until those two things harmonise the SMBN will help you by increasing exposure to your business.

We also now welcome ‘Friends of the SMBN’ which is open to all businesses who offer support to the SMBN whilst benefitting from affordable exposure all year.

I set-up my award-winning company KIH Products in 2013 after designing the KIH Bed – a Pregnancy Cushion used by Massage Therapists, Osteopaths and Chiropractors to enable clients to lay on their bellies at variable stages of pregnancy, in 2011 when I was heavily pregnant. I had also embarked on a Law Degree when I fell pregnant in 2011 and once I graduated in 2016 I published Finding Happiness and Freeing Your Spirit to help others help themselves move forward in a positive way. I am also a confidante, visionary, co-organiser of Find Your Power 2021 and author of Finding Happiness and Freeing Your Spirit.
