Teatro Vivo

In Spring we're hoping to bring The Hunters Grimm to the streets of Catford and Stratford in London.

This will be an exciting and innovative piece of theatre that will be staged through the streets and in and out of local businesses. It will be performed by a professional cast and a local community chorus.

We're currently trying to raise funds to enable the show both to happen out and about in these local areas, and to include as many people as possible in our community chorus workshops.

We're currently fundraising to create 'Evelyn's Roots':

Inspired by Deptford Folk’s incredible Evelyn 200 campaign, we are proposing to create a new play called EVELYN’S ROOTS and to stage free outdoor promenade performances of the show in Deptford's Evelyn Ward in July 2018.

EVELYN’S ROOTS will tell stories inspired by the experiences of real people who have lived and laid down their roots in Deptford over the last 400 years. From Thankfull Sturdee, one of the first British press photographers who lived on Evelyn Street and the McMillan Sisters who set up the Deptford Clinic to John Evelyn himself these stories will blend fact and fiction to bring the history of these local streets to life. The project will be led by director Sophie Austin and writer Bernadette Russell. Together we will work with local people to help us hunt out the historical and contemporary stories that weave the rich history of the people of Deptford.

The performance will take an audience on a walk through the streets of Evelyn Ward where characters from our collected stories will appear and tell of their connection to the area. Potentially starting at Pepys estate and ending in Deptford Park next to Evelyn 200 Tree Number 1, the stories will celebrate the laying down of Deptford Roots over the last 400 years. The final story will be created in collaboration with local young people and will imagine who might be laying their roots in Deptford in 2050.

We would like to turn the play into an audio walk that can be downloaded and listened to on a mobile phone or MP3 players at any time of the year enabling these stories to live on in people’s ears for years to come. We will also create a website that will host all the stories that we come across along with images of local contributors.

The Evelyn Roots project will be performed by a mix of professional actors and members of the local community, with lots of opportunities for local musicians, history enthusiasts, artists and makers to get involved.
