About us

Support 4 Sight assists people with sight loss, their carers and families. Expert staff and trained volunteers provide our services to assist people coming to terms with losing their sight and to cope long term with the social, emotional and practical issues that they face living with sight loss.

From our bases in both Saffron Walden and Chelmsford, we can offer dedicated resource centres fully stocked with specialised equipment to enable independent living opportunities for our service users. Callers can try out all manner of equipment to ensure it is exactly the right thing for their situation before purchasing. All are welcome preferably to see us by appointment, or drop in for support, to obtain information, advice, training, IT tuition or to trial our low vision equipment.

Support 4 sight have Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs), who work closely with medical and nursing staff in hospital eye clinics, and the sensory team in social services. They provide those recently diagnosed with an eye condition, the practical and emotional support which they need to understand their diagnosis, deal with their sight loss and maintain their independence.

We currently have staff and volunteers in Broomfield Hospital (Chelmsford), Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow), Saffron Walden Community Hospital, Braintree Community Hospital, St Margaret’s Hospital (Epping), Herts and Essex Hospital (Bishops Stortford) and Addenbrookes Hospital (Cambridge).

The support we offer on home visits assists people to live safely and independently at home. It includes how to cope with initial sight loss diagnosis, information on health issues, Eccentric viewing (use of peripheral sight), daily living skills advice, relevant training and lighting assessments to reduce risks of falls and in-home security advice.

We offer a full range of social events, including coffee mornings, speaking book clubs and organised outings. In addition we also run and produce the Saffron Walden Talking Newspaper for our members benefit.
