Campaigning to protect our landscape from HS2
The Chiltern Society is closely monitoring the impact of HS2 as the eight year construction period gets underway.
We opposed HS2 crossing the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and campaigned in Parliament and elsewhere for it to be tunnelled under the entire AONB. We are disappointed with Parliament’s decision to tunnel only part of the Chilterns as we think this will have a detrimental effect on the AONB.
We are also very concerned about the precedent HS2 has set for other protected landscapes.
However, the priority now is to do all we can to ensure that the disruption to communities and the environment is kept to a minimum. Our representatives are in regular contact with HS2 Ltd and the construction teams as well as MPs, local authorities and regulatory bodies.

We have a dedicated campaign team working on issues relating to HS2 ever since the high speed link was first mooted in 2009.
We are fortunate in that our membership includes those with specialist expertise in many areas, ranging from water engineering to countryside environment; from the Chilterns heritage to the Chilterns wildlife.
We can, and do, call on people with years of experience in business, public affairs, transport, engineering and conservation. We are going to continue to need that experience as we continue to liaise with politicians, local authorities, HS2 and the railway construction companies in the coming years.
