About us

BASIC is an influential think tank fostering innovative thinking and meaningful dialogue to bring about global nuclear disarmament, arms control and nonproliferation.

Founded in 1987, as the British American Security Information Council, we’ve developed trusted expertise on progressive international security policy, and have been an authority on nuclear weapons across the Atlantic for over thirty years, advising governments in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Russia.

Our highly-developed approach – which is based on active listening, understanding and empathy – enables us to host international dialogues between governments across political divides, and lay new pathways to inclusive security.

We do all this because we believe that every day nuclear weapons are possessed, they are more likely to be used.

Today, the risk of nuclear weapons use is higher than it has been since the Cold War. Across the Atlantic, the Trump Administration is talking again about fighting wars with nuclear weapons, and trust between the United States and Russia is dangerously low, with hundreds of weapons that can be fired at a moment’s notice. In Asia, the North Korean regime has missiles that could reach the United States mainland, while the ongoing low-level conflicts between the nuclear-armed India and Pakistan could easily escalate out of control.

Now, more than ever, we need to rethink our reliance on nuclear weapons and tackle the root causes of these conflicts. With your help, we can.
